Renowned Production Designer at Cebu's Bigfoot Studios

CEBU, Philippines (October 20, 2008) – Award-winning production designer John Sabato is making the transition from TV shows to movies by spending 17 weeks in the Philippines working on Bigfoot Entertainment’s full-length feature Victim of Circumstance.

Sabato decides on the visual story-telling for Victim of Circumstance by matching the sets, props, colors and vibes with the emotions of the story of a young Vietnamese woman who weds an American man through a marriage agency and is forced into a life of captivity and abuse in the United States. All of the sets for the international release are being built at Bigfoot Studios in Mactan, Cebu; filming will run from October through the end of the year.

Sabato says, “For the condominium in America where Phuong Ly is trapped, we apply a lot of gray to give the audience a sense that she is a prisoner in a cold, loveless place. We use vertical lines like the bars of a prison cell.  In contrast, I use a lot of bright colors for the scenes which take place in Vietnam to support the audience’s impression of the happy life Phuong Ly had there.”

These sets are being masterfully created in Bigfoot Studios. “In Sound Stage 1, the interior of the condominium is now starting to take shape.  It will be a ten-room set that will fill the entire stage,” Sabato explains.

On Victim of Circumstance, Sabato works with Filipino artistic director Sammy Esquillon and scriptwriter Frederick Bailey, who is a mentor at Bigfoot’s International Academy of Film and Television (IAFT). “This is a highly collaborative business. When working with the right people you can make anything happen. The people I’m working with are wonderful. It’s a unique production experience, with fascinating people from all over the world. There’s no reason the quality of Victim of Circumstance will not be as good as movies made in Hollywood. We have the talent here to pull it off,” says Sabato.

Twenty-five years ago Sabato began his career in entertainment as theater major who aspired to design sets. After college he went to New York. “I was in the right place at the right time,” he recalls. Now, his outstanding work can be seen on Blue Collar TV, The Man Show and Mad TV, all of which air on local cable. For his work on Mad TV, he is a three-time winner of the Art Director’s Guild Award for TV production design, the most prestigious award in the field, and has received eight consecutive Emmy nominations.
